DISPATCH FROM THE ROAD

NYC
One day without travel. One day to make a thousand travel arrangements. I just want to stay in bed! Cue Danny Glover muttering “I’m too old for this shit.”

Two great days in the cheesehead state! Nothing out of the ordinary on today’s canvass. I signed up to attend a debate night watch party downtown, but bailed at the last minute. Too tired to socialize. Plus I’m staying at an Airbnb apartment in the former Pabst brewery. It’s spacious and weird and cool and I just want to sit here and watch our future Madam President tear Fat Donnie a new one.

Just finished my second day of knocking in Michigan. Yesterday’s canvass in Milan (a suburb of Ann Arbor) was fine. No great shakes, no big problems. Today, on the other hand, SUCKED. I was given a small packet of houses in Portage, a blue collar town just south of K-Zoo. Big mistake. It seemed like every other house (if not EVERY house) was Trump’d up. At one home, a yapping dog and its 78-year-old man came to the screen door. I said I was volunteering for Kamala Harris. The first words out of his mouth were, “I hope someone kills her.” I apologized for disturbing him and walked away. A few houses later, I noticed a middle-aged man was hovering nearby. I turned to him and said, “how’s it going?” He said, “It’ll be a lot better when Trump’s back and all you Dems are gone.” Not knowing how to respond, I simply said, “Ok. Have a nice day.” “FUCK YOU,” he replied. The whole neighborhood was like that. Scary, sad, sobering, maddening stuff. Sigh.

Today rocked. One of the best canvassing experiences I’ve ever had. First of all, I went out with a local legend. Dan McQuigg is an Ohio historian, political junkie, and proud hillbilly. We got our knock list from the crack team at Sherrod Brown’s Columbus field office. Then we headed to Deshler Park and it was ON. Typically, you’re lucky to have one meaningful encounter during a whole day of canvassing. Meaningful = engaging conversation, tangible persuasion, and calls to action. Today we got someone to switch their vote from red to blue, someone else to register, someone else to fill out a voter commitment card, someone else to volunteer and bring people to the polls. It was off the chain positive vibes in a neighborhood that ranged from apolitical, apathetic, and uninformed to downright Trumpy. I hit the road to Michigan with the wind in my sails… and slamming against my rental minivan, along with a shit ton of rain. Whatev. On to Ann Arbor. Go Blue.

Putnam County, NY
Yesterday was one of the most fulfilling days of canvassing I’ve ever had because yesterday I knocked with my family. My fantastic baby sister, her fantastic husband, and one of their stupendous daughters joined me on the trail in NY-17. The neighborhood was Trumpy af, but everyone we encountered was registered, blue, and ready to shoo the GOP out of their district. Mondaire Jones is an excellent candidate and will (once again) make NY proud in the lower chamber. LFG.

New York City.
Back home in my own bed for the first time in 2 weeks. Exhausted but SO EXCITED for tomorrow. If all goes according to plan, I’m going to canvass for the first time with my little sister and her two amazing nieces!! We’ll be knocking in one of the most pivotal CDs in the country: NY-17, where Mondaire Jones is poised to make a triumphant return to Congress. The opportunity to make a difference in my home state is special. doing the work alongside close family members is off-the-charts special. See you tomorrow, Rockland County. LFG.

Thanks to a few well-timed posts from righteous & influential friends, hat sales are through the roof. Thank you so much to everyone who bought a lid or chipped in a few (hundred) bucks. Because of your support, I’ve added more states to my trek. With the addition of Colorado and Minnesota, we’re up to 19!
The next several days are all about planning, logistics, and busy work: booking flights and cars, getting hats out the door, and making sure my walking shoes have enough cushion to handle the grueling grind of Sep/Oct. LFG!

Doylestown.
And we’re off! My crew from NYC, BK, Beacon, and Newburgh caravaned across the Delaware River and into the most pivotal state in this year’s election. We did some training, knocked a packet of doors, and got a dose of cold water in our hopeful faces. LOTTTTA Trump voters. Oof. People, we have work to do. Swing state voters need to know what’s up. Sign up to canvass, STAT.

Fulfilling dozens of hat orders (🎉), booking flights to Montana, CA, TX, and AZ (💸), and cramming 3 months of appointments and errands into 2½ days. Can’t wait for Sunday, when I finally get to do what I do best: knock doors, engage with strangers, and GOTV!!

Mission accomplished! I was blessed and honored to speak at Michael Blake’s annual Kairos event, “Convening For The Culture.” My presentation was basically a mini TED Talk on canvassing, along with some perspective on my life in the social justice movement, and what it’s like to be an ally, or as Tamika Mallory calls it, “an accomplice.” This was the perfect way to launch my nationwide trek: surrounded by motivation, inspiration, insight, and an island teeming with Black excellence. LFG.
